『 音のイリュージョン 』 は聴覚の情報処理の本だ。ガヤガヤうるさい所でも人と話ができるのは、音素修復と呼ばれる知覚の補完が行われるからだ。声に限らず、連続した音の一部を雑音で隠しても、連続した音である可能性が高いと脳が見なした場合は、音は補完される。連続聴効果という。
面白いことに、滑らかに上昇する音と上がった後に下降する音をそれぞれ真ん中で雑音でマスクしても、両者とも問題なく聞こえる。雑音前の音は同じなのに、あたかも雑音後の音の変化を予測したような知覚補完が起きるのだ。実際には知覚は現実からは遅れているのだが、それを我々は自覚できないのだと考えられる。
知覚は単純な物理的な測定器ではない。知覚は周囲の時空間で何が起きているのかを把握するために存在する。音は単なる空気の振動ではない。脳のなかで生成されている。

▼風邪は喉から鼻づまりと咳に症状が移行した。
▼NHKスペシャル「 防災力クライシス そのとき被災者を誰が救うか 」を途中から見た。「高齢化やコミュニティの崩壊を背景に、災害への備えの劣化が進む」という話。だが話があまり掘り下げられておらず、中途半端な番組だった。番組ならば例えば「模索が続けられている」と言えばすむが、当事者たちはそれではすまない。
▼チャンネルを教育テレビに変えるとやはり防災とコミュニティの話で、街を「コンパクトシティ」にして平たい低地をもう一度田畑にせよと大学の先生らしき人が語っていた。そのほうが洪水や地震にも強いし、１０年、２０年かければ夢ではない、と。言いたいことは分かるが、机上の空論にしか聞こえなかった。
▼高密度化したほうがエネルギー効率も高くなるし、環境負荷も下がる。インフラのコストも相対的に下がる。だから言いたいことは分かる。だが高齢化すればするほど地縁は濃くなっていく。高齢者に土地を空けて「コンパクトシティ」に引っ越せ、そのほうが防災の役にも立つ、というのは無理な話だ。無理というか、そういう社会は幸福な社会ではないと思う。だいたい田畑を誰が ...
