詩的な表現を使えば恋や愛、ざっくりいえば繁殖活動や生殖行為、すなわち性行動は個々人にとっても、動物としてのヒト全体にとっても意義深い。だが未解明のことがらが多い。
『 性器の進化論 』 は恋愛中の脳内物質の変化や活動をいくら調べたところで愛を理解することはできないという。そして、性現象のなかで具体的に捉えやすく他の動物との比較も容易なのは生殖器、性生理、性行動の道筋だとして、ヒトの「性複合体」の進化を追った本である。
なるほど確かに、ちゃんと探れるところから探っていくこのアプローチは科学的だ。読んでいても安心感がある。一方、この分野に興味がある読者には目新しい話がやや少ない点が残念ではあったが、著者は最後に、ヒトのメスは受精後に生殖管のなかで、胎児に対して何らかのメカニズムで淘汰をかけているのではないかと論じている。これは実に興味深い可能性だ。
