Tweet 共同通信 2009年掲載 『 医学探偵ジョン・スノウ　コレラとブロードストリートの井戸の謎 』 （サンドラ・ヘンペル（Sandra Hempel）著　杉森裕樹、大神英一、山口勝正 訳　日本評論社　ISBN 978-4-535-58541-6　2800円＋税） 　一九世紀イギリスではコレラが周期的に流行していた。ジョン・スノウはその感染経路が水だと突き止めた医師だ。 　コレラは空気感染だと考えられていた時代に、スノウは臨床経験と患者の分布パターンから、汚染された水からの経口感染を疑った。最初に発表した一八四九年には無視された。だが再びコレラが流行しはじめた一八五四年、スノウは感染患者が発生した地区の一つ「ブロードストリート」で自ら聞き込み調査を行い、統計資料を調べあげて地図上に記載した。家ごとに死亡者数の印をつけ、どの家がどの水道を使っているか調べたのだ。そして、一つの井戸が原因だと突き止めた。 　当時、コレラ菌は未発見だ。だがスノウの「疾病地図」は複雑に絡み合った原因の構造を示し、病原体と感染経路の本質を暴き出したのだ。 　百ページ過ぎてもスノウ本人が登場しないなど、本文は淡々と進む。交易と感染症拡大の関 ...
