ニワトリは匂いセンサーが少なく、イルカは嗅覚や味覚をほとんど使ってない。 『 環境を＜感じる＞ 生物センサーの進化 』 は味や匂いの受容体など、感覚の進化に関する本だ。生物は遺伝子を重複させることで、新たな遺伝子を獲得し、新たな感覚を得てきた。もともとの受容体の種類が異なるため、感覚の知覚は生物それぞれで全く異なったものだと考えられる。
人では、嗅覚や苦みに関連する遺伝子が壊れている。機能を失う偽遺伝子化の速度もヒトでは他の霊長類と比べて数倍速くなっているという。なぜだろうか。
