携帯電話にネット、デジタル放送と情報通信技術の世話にならない日はない。猛烈な速度で動作する高速トランジスタは日本人技術者による発明だ。 『 日本人とナノエレクトロニクス 』 は５人の日本人研究者に焦点をあてて、電子デバイスの原理や発想、発展の歴史や可能性を解説していく一冊だ。量子細線や量子ドット、フラッシュメモリやスピントロニクスなどなどの技術開発の歩みが丁寧に解説されている。
ナノスケールで加工された構造からなる集積回路は、既存の人工物とは本質的に異なる複雑さを持ち、自然界にない機能を発揮する。どんな構造を作りこめば新機能を創出できるのか。そこに苦労と醍醐味があるのだが、最近は、ものづくり系は人気がないという。本書は、新技術を開発する意義とやりがいを語る研究者たち自身の言葉で締めくくられている。
