宇宙飛行中には筋肉中のタンパク質合成が抑制され、アクチンフィラメントが減少する。宇宙飛行の筋肉の萎縮はユビキチン依存性タンパク質分解系による収縮性タンパク質の分解が原因の一つだという。 『 宇宙環境と生命 』 は、広い意味での宇宙環境が生物に与える影響を調べたこれまでの研究結果や、日本の研究者たちの活動などをまとめた本だ。一言で宇宙環境といっても無重量や高エネルギーの宇宙線はもちろん、宇宙船内はエチレンガスの濃度が高めである、といった話も含まれる。本書はハンドブックサイズながら、それらもろもろが圧縮されて収録されている。
