人生や世の中なんて行き当たりばったり、「たまたま」だ。でも、才能や努力の影響も結構あるし、偶然と才能が半々かな、と考えている人が大半だろう。
だが 『 たまたま 』 の著者、理論物理学者ムロディナウは、そうではないと断言する。監督がどんなに優れていても映画の不発が続くこともあるし、専門家が市場で勝てないこともある。彼らが自分の能力をちゃんと発揮しても、失敗に終わることがあるのだ。
つまり、世の中は本質的に不確かなものだというのが本書の趣旨である。常に「たまたま」が本質的なのだという。
人間は物事に因果関係や必然性を見いだす。その結果、出来事の解釈や期待にバイアスがかかる。成功者を見れば才能があると思い、売れている人間は能力が高いと思う。そして偶然の役割を見落とす。だがたいていの場合、出来事の因果関係は起こったあとでなければ理解できないものだ。成功者たちももう一度同じ条件で同じ事をやったから ...
