京都大学大学院医学研究科の小林拓也講師と学習院大学、米Stanford Universityの研究チームは、Gたんぱく共役受容体（GPCR）の1つ、ムスカリンM2受容体の立体構造を世界で初めて解明した。2012年1月26日にNature誌オンライン速報版に発表した。科学技術振興機構（JST）のERATO型研究「岩田ヒト膜受容体構造プロジェクト」（研究総括は京都大学大学院医学研究科の岩田想教授・写真）の成果。

米DuPont社は2012年1月12日、ヨーロッパのDROught-Tolerant Plants (DROPS) Research Consortiumに参加し、自社のトウモロコシ研究用最先端干ばつ作物モデリングプラットフォームを提供して干ばつ問題の解決に協力してゆくことになったと発表した。

米POET社とオランダRoyal DSM社は2012年1月23日、両社の補完し合う独自技術に基づいてセルロースエタノールを商業生産し、またその技術を第三者にライセンスするジョイントベンチャーPOET-DSM Advanced Biofuels社を設立すると発表した。POET-DSM社は、工業規模のセルロースエタノール生産を2013年後半に開始する予定である。

日本ロレアルは、2012年1月にリサーチ＆イノベーション（R＆I）センターを延べ床面積と研究者数ともに約25％拡充し、アジア・オープンリサーチなど3部門を新設したことを1月25日に発表した。同社は同日、川崎市の神奈川サイエンスパーク（KSP）内にあるR＆Iセンターでアジア・グローバル戦略の説明会を開催し、施設見学ツアーも行った。
