国立成育医療研究センター研究所の細胞医療研究室の東範行室長らと浜松医科大学眼科の堀田喜裕教授らは、成人失明の主要な原因である難病の一つ網膜色素変性症において、日本に多い遺伝形式である常染色体劣性遺伝では、実に20％もの高頻度でEYS（eyes shut homolog）遺伝子の異常が原因であることを見いだした。オープンアクセス科学誌である米PLoS ONE誌で2012年2月18日7時（米国時間2月17日17時）にオンライン掲載されることが決まった。当初、この論文のオンライン掲載は2月2日7時とされてきたが、PLoS ONE誌側のテクニカルな問題により、実際の発表は16日遅くなった。
