神戸学院大学栄養学部の水品善之准教授らは同大農学部、長岡香料技術開発研究所と共同で、薬用ハーブとして知られるカモミール精油成分が、哺乳類のDNAポリメラーゼ（pol）を阻害して、抗がん・抗炎症作用を発揮することを見いだした。市販されている精油20種類についてヒト大腸がん細胞の増殖抑制活性、抗酸化活性、脱顆粒反応抑制活性を比較した。京都市で開催された日本農芸化学会2012年度大会で2012年3月24日に発表した。会場は立ち見であふれ、大盛況だった。

東海大学医学部基礎医学系分子生命科学の猪子英俊教授らは、ライフテクノロジーズの高速シーケンサー「Ion PGM」を用いてヒト白血球抗原（HLA）型をタイピングする技術を開発した。1分子のDNAから配列を決めるため、多型部位の染色体上の位置情報を含めたHLA型が正確に把握できる。

米AVIBioPharma社は2012年4月2日、デュシェンヌ型筋ジストロフィー（DMD）男児が参加したエテプリルセン（eteplirsen）のフェーズ IIb 臨床試験の結果、薬効の主要な評価指標が達成されたと発表した。臨床試験は、無作為、2重盲検、プラセボ比較で行われ、エテプリルセンまたは、プラセボが週に1回、24週間にわたり投与された。その結果、30mg/kg投与群で、プラセボ群に比較して、ジストロフィン量の統計上有意な上昇が示された。しかしながら、臨床上のデータとしては、治療群とプラセボ群の間で有意な差異は無かった。
