腫瘍崩壊性レオウイルスは、細胞溶解作用によりがん細胞を特異的に殺し、さらにワクチンのようにがんに対する免疫反応を刺激する作用も持つ。しかし、このウイルスを腫瘍に送達する方法は確立されていない。独Leed大学などのRobert A. Adair氏らは、進行大腸がん患者10人にレオウイルスを静注して、この投与法が有望であることを示した。詳細はScience Translational Medicine誌12年6月13日号に報告された。

スイスBasilea Pharmaceutica社は2012年6月11日、英GlaxoSmithKline（GSK）社傘下の米Stiefel社と重度慢性手湿疹の治療薬「Toctino」（一般名：alitretinoin）の世界的独占契約を締結したと発表した。契約に伴い、Stiefel社はToctinoの世界的独占権を獲得し、Basilea社は前払い金1億4600万ポンド（2億2700万ドル）を得る。Basilea社はこの資金により、抗菌薬や抗がん剤の候補化合物の開発を進める考えだ。
