カネカのフロンティアバイオ・メディカル研究所が、血液中の中性脂肪を減らす機能を発揮する新規乳酸菌Pediococcus acidilactici R037（以下、R037）の開発を進めていることが分かった。ヒト試験でもこの作用を確認した成果を、、自社で保有する約1000株の中から選び出し、ヒトの試験でもこの作用を確認した。この成果をまずは、2012年5月25日に都内で開催された北里大学乳酸菌プロジェクト公開シンポジウムで発表した。次いで、2012年6月14日から15日に神戸市で開催される第16回腸内細菌学会で発表する。

北里大学が2012年5月25日、乳酸菌プロジェクト「分子基盤理解に基づく乳酸菌の健康増進機能の開発とその食・医療への応用」の公開シンポジウムを北里大薬学部（東京・港）で開催し、160人余りの参加者が集まった。企業はカゴメ、サントリーウエルネス、ヤエガキ発酵技研、カネカの4社がそれぞれ乳酸菌関連研究の成果を発表した。乳酸菌株などをライブラリーとして保管していた海洋バイオテクノロジー釜石研究所は2011年3月11日からの東日本大震災の影響を受けたものの、液体窒素で保管していた乳酸菌300株は全て無事であったことも分かった。 ※続報で、北里大学海洋バイオテクノロジー釜石研究所の跡地における整備状況を追加しました。
