スイカの果汁から発見されたアミノ酸であるシトルリンを夕食後に1日800mg、8週間摂取してもらったら、FMD（血流依存性血管拡張反応）やLOX-1（レクチン様酸化LDL受容体）結合酸化LDLが有意に改善することが分かった。所沢ハートセンターの桜田真己理事長・院長が2012年7月6日に都内で開かれた第4回シトルリン研究懇談会で、この介入試験の成果の一端を発表した。

米Capricor社は、米食品医薬品局（FDA）が、同社の同種心臓由来幹細胞製品「CAP-1002」の臨床試験開始を承認したと発表した。心筋梗塞発症後30日以上が経過した患者、虚血性左室機能不全の患者の心筋に、幹細胞を直接注射する。
