脳内のドパミンを分泌する神経細胞が失われ、運動障害を引き起こす神経変性疾患、パーキンソン病(PD)。代表的な症状は、震え、筋肉のこわばり(筋固縮)、姿勢の不安定化などだ。現在臨床で用いられている治療は、患者に不足しているドパミンの放出促進や補充、筋固縮や震えの原因となるアセチルコリン受容体の遮断などの対症療法。1990年代後半以降、疾患の発症につながるさまざまな遺伝的変異が同定され、病気の根本原因に対処する新しい治療の開発に期待が持たれている。
