欧州委員会は2012年7月17日、欧州連合（EU）域内での臨床試験のルールを大幅に改革する提案を発表した。複数国で試験を実施する場合も1つの申請で済むように手続きを簡素化するのが柱だ。

米Osiris Therapeutics社の幹細胞治療薬「Prochymal」が、小児における急性移植片対宿主病（GVHD）の治療薬として2012年5月17日、カナダで承認された。幹細胞を用いた治療薬が承認されたというだけではなく、GVHDに対する初の治療薬としても注目を集めた。Osiris社はこれまで、GVHDを適応とする2本のフェーズIIIを実施したが、いずれも主要評価項目を達成できず失敗したと考えられていた。そのため、今回の承認はかなりの驚きを持って報道された。
