2012年7月28日、世界保健機関（WHO）は、東アフリカのウガンダで7月初旬にエボラ出血熱が発生し、14人が死亡したと発表した。エボラ出血熱はエボラウイルスによる急性熱性疾患で、血液や体液などとの接触によって動物からヒト、ヒトからヒトへと感染する。感染すると50％から90％が死亡するとされ、現時点では有効なワクチンは存在せず、治療法も対症療法しかない。

ラクオリア創薬は、米Pfizer 社の日本研究所がスピンアウトして2008年7月に誕生した創薬ベンチャーである。研究所の人員や設備を引き継ぐ形で、事業をスタートさせた。ベンチャーキャピタルなどから111億円（現物出資を含む）という多額の資金を調達することに成功し、国内では例の無い大型創薬ベンチャーとして注目を集めた。設立時に、疼痛や消化器疾患、感染症領域などにおける10数種類のプロジェクトや候補化合物の権利をPfizer社から譲渡された。短期的にはこれらの権利をライセンスアウトすることで収益を確保し、中長期的には自社創薬品を継続的に生み出すことで成長するというビジネスモデルを描いていた。
