米Thermo Fisher Scientific社と、シンガポール国立大学（NUS）の環境研究所は、2013年1月21日、植物とバクテリアの代謝が、シンガポール周辺の水質と生態系に与える影響に関する研究で協力すると発表した。

米Allergan社と米MAP Pharmaceuticals社は2013年1月23日、最終的な合併合意を締結し、Allergan社がMAP社の全株式を一株当たり25ドルで買収すると発表した。買収総額は約9億5800万ドルとなる。MAP社は神経内科疾患の新薬の開発と市販を手掛ける生物製剤企業で、同社の成人片頭痛患者の急性期治療として用いる経口吸入薬「LEVADEX」は、現在、米国食品医薬品局（FDA）によって承認審査が行われている。

米Affymax社と米Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A社は、2013年1月23日、透析を受けている成人の慢性腎臓病患者の貧血治療における「OMONTYS」（peginesatide）注射の安全性と有効性をエポエチンと評価した非盲検の無作為化フェーズIII EMERALD 1とEMERALD 2の結果がNEJM誌電子版に2013年1月24日に報告されたことを明らかにした。

東京都医学総合研究所の平野恭敬主任研究員（科学技術振興機構さきがけ研究員を兼任）と齊藤実参事研究員らは、ショウジョウバエの学習実験で、空腹状態が長期記憶形成を促進することを見いだした。記憶を長期的に保存するために脳の神経細胞で重要な働きをするCREB（cAMP response element binding protein）に結合するCRTC（camp-regulated transcriptional co-activator）が、空腹時にはインスリンの低下で活性化され細胞核に移行することが、この記憶促進に寄与すること突き止めた。首都大学東京との共同研究によるこの成果を、2013年1月25日発行の米Science誌で発表する。ちょうど受験シーズンということもあり、1月23日に文部科学省で開催された記者説明会では、今回の成果を受験勉強にどのように結びつけることが可能かに関する質問が集中した。説明会にはTVカメラ5台が並んだ。
