がんの病因となっている分子を標的とする薬剤が開発され、既存薬では達成できなかった効果を示している。これらの薬剤が登場してきた背景には、抗体の存在がある。特異的に標的分子と結合し、その作用を中和できる性質に加え、科学技術の進展によって抗原性の無い医薬品として改良されてきた。2012年に承認を受けた薬剤の物質的特徴を見ると興味深いことが分かる。抗体ばかりではなく、抗体の部分構造との融合たんぱく質、抗体-低分子化合物複合体のミサイル療法、病因であるたんぱく質が出すシグナルを阻害する低分子化合物など多岐にわたっている。技術の進歩によって創薬プラットホームが広がった成果と捉えることができる。

米食品医薬品局（FDA）は2013年1月25日、武田薬品工業が申請していた糖尿病治療薬「Nesina」（米国での販売名、一般名：安息香酸アログリプチン、開発コード：SYR-322）、「Oseni」（アログリプチンと塩酸ピオグリタゾンの合剤）、および「Kazano」（アログリプチンと塩酸メトホルミンの合剤）の承認を発表した。FDAの承認を受けて、武田薬品も26日午前9時30分にリリースをしている。アログリプチンが米国で申請されたのは07年12月であるから、その間に5年間の年月を費やした承認獲得となった。
