米エネルギー省(DOE)傘下のBrookhaven National Laboratory(BNL)は2013年2月8日、同研究所の研究チームが長い炭素鎖分子であるアルカンの生合成サイクルを著しく改善することに成功したと発表した。チームはなぜ細胞内で起こるアルカン合成反応が通常3〜5サイクルで停止してしまうのかを探求し、その知識を基にして反応を継続させるための戦略を考案した。
