米Massachusetts工科大学（MIT）は2013年2月17日、化学工学および生物学の研究者から成る研究チームが酵母のイソブタノール生産性を大幅に押し上げる方法を考案したと発表した。酵母は通常少量のイソブタノールしか産生しないが、研究チームは酵母を組換え、イソブタノール生合成がすべてミトコンドリア内で起こるように設計した。ミトコンドリアはエネルギーを生成し、また多くの生合成経路をつかさどる細胞内組織。このアプローチにより、酵母のイソブタノール生産性を約260％押し上げることに成功した。

国際アグリバイオ事業団（ISAAA）は2013年2月20日、遺伝子組換え作物（GM作物）の商業栽培に関する年次報告（2012年）を発表した。2012年にGM作物が栽培された面積は28カ国の合計で1万7030ヘクタール（ha）と、これまでの最大を更新した。発展途上国20カ国の栽培面積が52％を占め、先進工業国8カ国の栽培面積を初めて上回った。発展途上国では2011年に比べ11％、870万ha増加したのに対し、先進工業国では同3％、160万ヘクタールの増加だった。組換え作物を栽培した農家の数は1730万戸と、2011年に比べ60万戸増加した。GM作物を栽培した28カ国の人口は40億人で、世界人口の約60％を占めるという分析も発表した。
