今月もまた新たな植物のゲノムが解読された。インドにある国際半乾燥熱帯作物研究所（ICRISAT）の科学者が率いる国際チームは、ヒヨコマメ90系統のゲノムの高解像シーケンスを完了したとしている。また国際グループが、ゴムの木Hevea brasiliensisのドラフトゲノム配列を決定したことも大きな進歩といえよう。タイヤはやはり天然ゴムが最良とのことである。そうであればこの生産を上げることは化石燃料の節約も含め重要な発見といえる。また、Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt corn）を発現するトウモロコシハイブリッドは、害虫抵抗性作物だけでなく、重要な農業形質としての利点がある。これは、イリノイ大学Urbana-Champaign校の研究者によって行われた調査の結果である。この調査でBtトウモロコシは収量と窒素利用を増加することが分かった。

オーストラリアMonash大学は2013年3月4日、生物科学部のJohn Bowman教授を中心とする研究グループが、植物の生殖（reproduction）を制御しているメカニズムを明らかにし植物の進化についての新たな知見をもたらしたと発表した。生産性の高い作物を遺伝子工学的に作製する手段として活用できる可能性も出てきた。研究グループには広島大学大学院理学研究科、JSTのERATO、総合研究大学院大学の基礎生物学研究所（岡崎）などの日本の研究機関も参加している。

米Isis Pharmaceuticals社は2013年3月13日、アンチセンス製剤「ISIS-CRP Rx」がC反応性たんぱく質（CRP）の急激な増加を選択的に低減すると発表した。ISIS-CRP RxのフェーズI試験のデータから、同薬剤はバクテリア感染に類似する免疫反応を引き出すエンドトキシンチャレンジ試験後に起こるCRP反応を統計的有意かつ用量依存的に低減する作用を持つことが示された。
