東京大学医科学研究所は、2013年3月11日、共同研究拠点事業の2012年度の成果報告会を開催した。文部科学省に認定された「基礎・応用医科学の推進と先端医療の実現を目指した医科学共同研究拠点」としての事業で、2010年度に開始されたものだ。

米Pennsylvania大学医学部は2013年3月6日、生理学のKevin Foskett教授を中心とする9つの機関の研究者から成る研究チームが、体の主要なエネルギー分子であるATPがどのようにして5つの基本味覚タイプのうちの3タイプの味覚情報を脳に伝えるかを解明したと発表した（関連記事）。ATPは神経伝達物質として甘味、苦味、旨味を感じる味蕾細胞から放たれるが、味蕾細胞の細胞膜を貫通しているイオンや分子を細胞の内外へ出入りさせるチャンネルたんぱく質のcalcium homeostasis modulator 1（CALHM1）がATPを放出し味覚情報を神経伝達することが分かった。残り2つの味覚、酸味と塩味の情報は異なるメカニズムを使用して脳に伝えられることも分かった。
