米Amyris社は2013年4月11日、自社の研究陣が抗マラリア薬Artemisininの重要な前駆体を組み換え酵母を使って生産する方法を開発、その詳細がNature誌に掲載されたと発表した。Artemisininは世界で最も効き目があり望ましいとされる抗マラリア薬の有効成分である。また同じ日、フランスの大手製薬企業Sanofi社はAmyris社が開発した酵母菌株を利用して、Artemisininの大規模生産を開始したと発表した。
