浜松医科大学の針山孝彦教授、東北大学原子分子材料科学高等研究機構の下村政嗣教授らは、高真空下でも生命を保護できる生体適合性プラズマ重合膜を発明した。これを使うと、ボウフラやウジなどを生きた状態で電子顕微鏡観察することができる。Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences誌に2013年4月15日の週に発表した。筆頭著者は浜松医大の高久康春博士。

米California大学Davis校（UC Davis校）は2013年4月8日、化学科のAnnaliese Franz助教が率いる研究チームが医薬品をスクリーニングするのと同様のアプローチで、バイオディーゼルや「グリーン」燃料の原料となる微細緑藻類由来オイルの生産性を大幅に向上させる物質をいくつか発見したと発表した。

米Bristol-Myers Squibb社（BMS社）は2013年4月15日、都内で年次記者説明会を開催した。Lamberto Andreotti最高経営責任者（写真）は、「2015年に日本国内で上位20社に入ることを目指す」と話した。2012年は米国で販売していた抗血小板薬「プラビックス」（クロピドグレル）の特許期間が満了し、バイオファーマへの移行が否応なく加速された年となったものの、日本法人のブリストル・マイヤーズでは、2012年の純売上は620億円となり、2011年比13％増加した。
