米エネルギー省（DOE）傘下のBrookhaven National Laboratoryは2013年4月24日、同研究所の研究チームが水素の生成に触媒として使用されている高価なプラチナを置き換えることができる、ダイズとモリブデンから作られた効果的で低コストの安定した触媒を開発したと発表した（関連記事）。この触媒は環境にやさしくコスト効率の良い方法でクリーンエネルギー源の水素を生産できる可能性を拓くと期待されている。
