理化学研究所脳科学総合研究センター（理研BSI）細胞機能探索技術開発チームの宮脇敦史チームリーダー（TL）と熊谷安希子基礎科学特別研究員らは、ニホンウナギの筋肉に存在する緑色蛍光たんぱく質UnaGがビリルビンと結合して蛍光を発することを見いだし、ビリルビンを高感度、迅速、正確に定量できる蛍光検出試薬（ビリルビンセンサー）を開発した。善玉コレステロールとして知られるHDLコレステロールの検出にも利用できる。さらにクラゲやサンゴの蛍光たんぱく質と異なりUnaGは分子状の酸素が無くても蛍光を発するため低酸素状態の固形がんでも蛍光を発するという特長がある。この研究は、科学技術振興機構（JST）戦略的相応研究推進事業ERATO型研究「宮脇生命時空間情報プロジェクト」の一環で行われ、Cell誌のオンライン版で2013年6月13日（日本時刻6月14日）付で発表された。
