日本政府が2013年6月14日、安倍政権の経済財政政策の柱となる「骨太の方針」を閣議決定した。このうち成長戦略には、「一般健康食品の機能性表示を可能とする仕組みの整備」が盛り込まれた。いわゆる健康食品や農林水産物について、健康機能性の表示を可能にする制度を検討する。2013年度中に検討を開始し、2014年度中に実施に移す計画が示された。内閣府規制改革会議は、一般健康食品の機能性表示を可能とする仕組みの整備について6月5日に答申した。

サントリーグローバルイノベーションセンター（サントリーSIC、有代雅人社長）は、兵庫県立大学環境人間学部の永井成美教授、京都大学大学院人間・環境学研究科の森谷敏夫教授らと共同で、炭酸水が飲水だけでなく、口腔内の刺激でも満腹感を増強すること、さらに末梢体温や心拍数が口腔内の刺激で変化することを、ヒト試験で見いだした。健常女性13人を対象にしたランダム化クロスオーバー試験の結果を、名古屋市で開かれた第67回日本栄養・食糧学会大会で2013年5月26日に2題発表した。会場は廊下まで立ち見であふれ盛況だった。

大阪大学微生物病研究所の岡部勝特任研究員（2013年3月まで教授）らは、miR-200b、miR-429を持たない雌マウスで排卵が無くなり、不妊になることを発見した。2013年6月13日にScience誌オンライン版で発表した。筆頭著者は阪大微生物病研究所の蓮輪英毅助教。
