スペインAbengoa社は2013年6月26日、廃棄物をバイオ燃料に変換する技術、いわゆるWaste-to-Biofuels（W2B）技術を利用した実証プラントの稼働を開始したと発表した。このプラントは2万5000tの都市固形廃棄物（MSW：municipal solid waste）を処理できる能力があり、燃料として使用できるバイオエタノールを最大1500kL生産できる。MSWからのバイオエタノール生産は廃棄物管理モデルにおける重要な技術的進展を象徴するものであるという。

2012年度補正予算で農林水産省が確保した交付金20億円で農業・食品産業技術総合研究機構（NARO）が推進する「機能性を持つ農林水産物・食品開発プロジェクト」のうち、「次世代機能性に関わる研究開発」の採択5課題が決定した。5課題のうち、外部公募研究課題の採択数は2課題。34課題の応募の中から選ばれたので競争率は17倍だった。この次世代機能性の予算額は上限が1課題当たり9000万円（3年分）。採択された5課題の概要を、外部公募の2課題と、直轄公募の3課題の順に以下に掲載する。
