厚生労働省の田村憲久大臣は2013年7月19日、理化学研究所と先端医療センターが申請していた「滲出型加齢黄斑変性に対する自家iPS細胞由来網膜色素上皮(RPE)シート移植に関する臨床研究」の実施を承認した。iPS細胞を使用した世界初の臨床試験が開始されることになる。
