「この薬は私の実母には使わないが、義母には使ってもよい」。ディスカッサントがこう締めくくると、会場から笑いが起こった??2009年の欧州心臓病学会で、KYOTO HEART Studyの発表の場にいた記者の証言だ。「Too good, to be true」と、発表時から疑いの目で見られていたこの試験は、データの改ざんが強く示唆されるという、残念な結末となった。日本の臨床研究に対する信頼性の低下が懸念されるのは当然だが、疑いを疑いのまま放置しておかなかった関係者に敬意を表したい。大切なのはこれから、同じことを繰り返さないために何をするかだろう。

標的配列と相補的な20塩基のガイドRNAを作製するだけで、ゲノム上の標的配列部位で2本鎖DNAを切断できる手軽なゲノム編集ツール「CRISPR（Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Plidromic Repeats）/Cas（CRISPR Associated）9」システムの活用が広がってきた。現在までにフナコシ/米System Biosciences（SBI）社、アプロサイエンス/米Transposagen社、タカラバイオ/韓国ToolGen社の3グループの事業化が分かった。
