ベルギーのVIB 研究所は2013年8月15日、植物細胞壁の主要成分のひとつであるリグニンの生合成経路中に、caffeoyl shikimate esterase（CSE）という酵素をコードしている新しい遺伝子を発見したと発表した。リグニンは植物バイオマスからバイオ燃料を生産するのに使用されるセルロース糖類を抽出する際の障壁となっており、この発見によりもっと効率的なバイオ燃料の生産が実現される可能性が出てきた。

少し古い話になってしまいましたが、休暇に入る前、8月9日の金曜日には「医療ニーズの高い医療機器等の早期導入に関する検討会」を取材しました。これはデバイスラグの解消のために2006年に設けられた厚生労働省の会議で、「国内で未承認または適応外の医療機器および体外診断用医薬品について、国内の医療ニーズが高いものを適応疾患の重篤性および医療上の有用性の観点から選定し、優先順位を付けて早期導入のための方策について検討」するもの。これまで60の品目を早期導入すべきものとして選定しています。9日の委員会では、新たに5つの品目が選定されました（CD34陽性細胞の標識・分離システム、経頭蓋反復磁気刺激によるうつ病治療装置、遊離メタネフリン測定キット、抗菌性脳脊髄用シャント、腫瘍治療電場システム、義眼台）。
