ベルギーVIB研究所は2013年8月29日、KU Leuven大学と兼任するVIBの研究チームが、廃棄物からこれまでにない効率でバイオエタノールを生産する酵母菌株を開発したと発表した（関連記事）。この酵母は世界で展開されているバイオ燃料産業において、重要な役割を果たすものと期待されている。
