先週京都で開催されたInternational Symposium on Single Biomolecule Analysis2013（ISBA2013）は極めて刺激的なシンポジウムでした。物理が嫌いで生物学を選んだ私でも、ナノテクノロジーがバイオを変革することを実感することができました。ゲノムから始まり、将来はマルチオミックスをコスト安く、迅速に計測するために、ナノテクノロジーの貢献は不可欠になると考えます。しかし、どのナノ技術が先端計測のボトルネックになるかは、時とともに実は大きく変遷いたします。現在、第三世代のDNAシーケンサーで余人を許さない米Pacific Biosciences社の創業者で最高技術責任者でもあるStephen Turner氏が打ち明けた第三世代のDNAシーケンサーの技術的な限界はまったく意外なことでした。また、半導体を活用した第四世代のDNAシーケンサーにも大きな技術的な飛躍が発表されました。ここ5年間位は生命科学やバイオ産業の牽引力としてDNAシーケンサーの技術革新は、その主役を降りることはない、、これが京都出張の収穫でした。わが国の精密機械産業やエレクトロニクス産業に取っても、DNAシーケンサーやマルチオミックス・シーケンサーに挑戦する必要があるのです。決し ...
