超党派の米上院議員30名は2014年1月16日、米環境保護局（EPA）のGina McCarthy長官に連名で書簡を送付、EPAが再生可能燃料基準（RFS-2）プログラムに基づいて2013年11月に提案した2014年のバイオ燃料使用義務量（RVOs：renewable volume obligations）を見直すよう要請した（関連記事）。

今週は水曜日（2014年1月29日）夜から、理化学研究所発生再生科学総合研究セ
ンター（理研CDB）細胞リプログラミング研究ユニットリーダーの小保方晴子博士
（工学）らがNature誌で発表したSTAP（刺激惹起性多能性獲得）細胞の話題で持
ちきりです。
小保方さんは早稲田大学応用化学科を06年に卒業した30歳の若手研究者。早大の
大学院の博士課程から留学した米Harvard大学のVacanti教授の研究室で、STAP細胞
の作製につながる研究着想を得たとのことです。早大の大学院進学後、東京女子医
科大学先端生命研究所の研修生として、再生医療と組織工学についての共同研究を
行い、博士課程1年時から２年弱の間、Vacanti教授の下で幹細胞と再生の関係性に
ついての研究を行い、2011年に早稲田大学先進理工学研究科にて博士（工学）を取
得しました。そして、2011年からは理研CDBにて客員研究員として、今回発表した
細胞初期化についての研究を進め、2013年3月に理研CDBのユニットリーダーに着任
しました。2011年から2013年までは、Vacanti教授の研究室に博士研究員として在
籍しました。
