国際科学技術財団は、2104年1月29日、2014年の日本国際賞の受賞者を発表した。生命科学分野の受賞者は、米Rockefeller Universityクロマチン生物学研究室のDavid Allis教授で、受賞業績は「遺伝子発現の制御機構としてのヒストン修飾の発見」。エレクトロニクス、情報、通信分野では、「大容量長距離光ファイバー通信用半導体レーザーの先導的研究」の業績で、末松安晴・東京工業大学栄誉教授が受賞した。

男性型脱毛症を治す可能性のあるアプローチの１つは、幹細胞を使って、死んで失われてしまった毛包を再生することだ。しかし今のところ、十分な数の毛包産生幹細胞を生み出すことは可能ではない。米University of PennsylvaniaのPerelman School of Medicineの病理、実験医学、皮膚科のXiaowei "George" Xu准教授らのグループは、成人の細胞を、上皮幹細胞へ転換する手法を発見した。同研究成果はNature Communications誌に掲載された。これはヒトでもマウスを使った実験でも、初めての成果だ。
