米Elevance Renewable Sciences社は2014年7月14日、マレーシアGenting Plantations社と共同でGenting Integrated Biorefinery（GIB）をマレーシアSabah州Lahad DatuにあるPalm Oil Industrial Cluster（POIC）内に建設することになったと発表した。Elevance社のもつ天然オイルから新しいスペシャリティ化学品を創り出すメタセシス（metathesis）技術を使い、Genting社はパーム油から高価値の化学品を生産する。

さて、2014年7月3日、文部科学省が「研究活動における不正行為への対応等に関するガイドライン」のパブリックコメントを開始しました。ここのところ頻発する研究不正と研究費の不正使用に関して、業を煮やした文科省がとうとう規制強化に立ち上がりました。今までは、研究の自由に遠慮して奥歯に物が挟まったようなガイドラインを設定、研究者の自主性を重視していた文科省も、STAP細胞騒動に対する社会の怒りを見て、堪忍袋の緒を切ったのです。自由と放埒をはき違えた迷える研究者達の考えを正すには、この規制強化はやむを得ない措置であると思います。しかし、これだけでわが国の大学や研究機関に蔓延するモラルハザードを一掃できると思うのは早計です。規制強化に加えて、もう1つ重要な手を打つ必要があると確信しています。それは大学や研究機関における研究と経営の分離であります。イノベーションによる成長戦略をとったわが国にとって、これは一刻の躊躇もなく解決すべき課題なのです。

近年では、TALENやCRISPR/Cas9などの部位特異的ヌクレアーゼの開発・改良が進み、ゲノム編集ツールの整備は一段落した状況となった。ベクター類はAddgeneや一部の試薬メーカーから入手可能であり、特定の遺伝子を標的とするTALENやCRISPR/Cas9ベクターを自作することも比較的容易になったと言える。単純な遺伝子破壊（ノックアウト）が目的であれば、もはや専門的な知識も技術も必須ではなく、文献を頼りに研究者自身がゲノム編集を実行することも決して困難ではないだろう。
