平成26年10月号の『民藝』は「刺子―東北地方の針仕事」特集です。
今回は、青森のこぎん刺しの普及に大きな功績をのこした、大川亮という人物について紹介しています。
また、先月号からのつづきで、柚木沙弥郎、岩立広子「カンタへの思い」後編も掲載しました。

2011年開所の花王の和歌山研究拠点、バイオ成果を9月に相次ぎ3件発表

花王が、和歌山事業場内に2011年6月に開所したエコテクノロジーリサーチセンター（ETRC）におけるバイオテクノロジーの研究成果を2014年9月に相次ぎ3件、発表した。同社は研究機関の改組を頻繁に行っている。2014年4月には、基盤研究セクターの生物科学研究所（本所は栃木県）の分室が和歌山に設置された。

小さなRNAであるmicroRNAが標的の遺伝子からの蛋白質合成（翻訳）を抑制することにより、遺伝子の発現を厳密に制御する機構が解明された。日本の2つの研究グループの成果が、2014年10月3日にMolecular Cell誌（IF14.464）オンライン版で発表された。東京大学分子細胞生物学研究所（分生研）の泊幸秀教授らはショウジョウバエの成果を、名古屋市立大学大学院薬学研究科の藤原俊伸教授らはヒトの成果を発表した。解析に用いた手法は全く異なる。泊教授と藤原教授は、文部科学省の科学研究費補助金の新学術領域研究「非コードRNA作用マシナリー」領域（09年度から2013年度まで）で研究を行った。このように日本の2つの研究グループが異なる手法で、異なる生物での成果を著名ジャーナルで同時発表したことは、日本がこの分野で高い研究レベルであることを示す好例といえそうだ。
