大阪大学は、大学院理学研究科の松岡茂特任准教授と杉山成特任准教授、村田道雄教授らが、脂肪酸結合蛋白質FABPが、水分子を巧みに利用して脂肪酸の長さを見分ける仕組みを解明した成果を論文発表したと、2015年1月7日に発表した。FABPが脂肪酸をグループとして見分ける“あいまい認識”をするメカニズムを突き止めた。この成果は、ドイツAngewandte Chemie International Edition誌（IF11.336）で2014年12月9日にオンライン版で公開された。
