米Energy Biosciences Institute(EBI)は2015年3月4日、米エネルギー省(DOE)傘下のLawrence Berkeley National Laboratory(Berkeley Lab)と米California大学Berkeley校(UC Berkeley校)と共同で、バイオマスから酵母発酵による燃料や化学品の生産を増大させる方法を見つけたと発表した。酵母に新しい代謝経路を導入することにより、環境に対して良くない前処理やコスト高の酵素カクテルを使用することなく、植物細胞壁に存在する2種類の主要糖類であるセルロースとヘミセルロースを酵母に効率的に発酵させることに成功した。
