東京医科歯科大学難治疾患研究所分子神経科学分野の田中光一教授と相田知海助教らは、第3世代のゲノム編集技術であるCRISPR/Cas9システムを改良することにより、緑色蛍光蛋白質（GFP）遺伝子を含む2.5kbの遺伝子を、45.5％という高効率でマウスのアクチン遺伝子に挿入（ノックイン）することに成功し、Genome Biology誌（IF10.465）で2015年4月29日に発表した。論文の共著者には、田中研究室の研究者らの他に、日本製粉グループのファスマック（神奈川県厚木市、布藤聡社長）や慶應義塾大学医学部精神・神経科学教室情動の制御と治療学研究寄附講座の田中謙二特任准教授、広島大学大学院理学研究科の山本卓教授と佐久間哲史特任助教も名を連ねている。

悪性黒色腫は白人に多く発生するため、海外では主要な腫瘍として皮膚科医や腫瘍内科医が積極的に臨床試験を行っているが、日本では患者数が少なく、希少癌として扱われている。最近まで根治切除不能な悪性黒色腫に対する標準化学療法は、「ダカルバジン注用」（ダカルバジン）の単剤療法のみであった。
