電源開発（J POWER）は2015年5月28日、北九州市の若松事業所内に設置した直径10mの円形池（面積80m2）で、燃料用油生産に適した海洋性珪藻ソラリス株の培養を開始した。J POWERは、新エネルギー・産業技術総合開発機構（NEDO）のプロジェクト「戦略的次世代バイオマスエネルギー利用技術開発」の委託研究に2013年度に採択され、2014年度に直径5mの円形池20個を用いて延べ307日の屋外安定培養を達成した。NEDOの受託研究は東京農工大学、日揮と共同で実施している。これに続き今回、培養面積を4倍にした施設で直径5mの場合と同じように10日間の回分培養で飽和藻体濃度まで増やせることを実証する。直径5mの円形池で1年間を通じて屋外で安定培養できた成果は、東京海洋大学品川キャンパスで開催される第17回マリンバイオテクノロジー学会大会で2015年5月31日に、J POWER技術開発部若松研究所バイオ・環境技術研究グループの松本光史課長・主任研究員が発表する。

理研ジェネシス（東京・台東、塚原祐輔社長）は2015年5月28日、国内で初めて、米国のClinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments（CLIA）法に基づく、CLIAラボとして認定されたと発表した。
