人間の腸内には100兆個を超える細菌や微生物が共生しているとされ、腸内菌叢のバランスの乱れが様々な疾患に関係することが知られている。次世代シーケンサーの登場などにより腸内菌叢の解析が進んだことを背景に、細菌などを用いて腸内菌叢をコントロールして疾患などの克服につなげようというコンセプトが浮上し、国内外でベンチャー企業が相次いで設立されている。今号の特集ではこうした腸内菌叢を標的とした創薬・治療法の開発に焦点を当てて動向をまとめた。

まずは機能性表示食品の届け出件数から。この1週間では今週火曜日（2016年4月19日）に7件（届出日は全て3月29日）追加され、合計296件になりました。近く300件突破ですね。この中でおもしろいのは、キリンビバレッジの飲料です。機能性関与成分は、テアニンとクエン酸。このうちクエン酸は、大阪市立大学や理化学研究所などで国のプロジェクトとして推進された抗疲労プロジェクトの成果を活用したものです。

今年に入って、武田薬品工業やエーザイが今後、それぞれ研究開発領域を絞り込んで投資を行うことが明らかになりました。武田は消化器、癌、精神神経の3領域に、エーザイは癌と中枢の2領域に集中して投資効率を上げるという決断です。世界的にみても、スイスNovartis社と英GlaxoSmithKline（GSK）がワクチン事業と抗癌剤事業との交換を行ったり、ドイツBayer社が米Merck社の大衆薬事業を買収するなどの洋の東西を問わず、戦略分野を絞る再編が目立ちます。

米Merck社が開発中の免疫チェックポイント阻害薬pembrolizumab（抗PD-1抗体）が皮膚の神経内分泌腫瘍であるメルケル細胞癌に有効であり、既存の標準治療に比べ生存期間を大幅に可能性があることが分かった。 4月16日から20日まで米国NewOrleansで開催された米癌学会年次総会（AACR2016）で、7施設による共同試験を率いた米Fred Huchinson Cancer Research CenterのPaul T. Nghiem博士が報告した。
