米Thomson Reuters社が2016年9月21日に発表した2016年トムソン・ロイター引用栄誉賞の化学分野で、「マウスおよびヒト細胞におけるゲノム編集手法CRISPR/Cas9の適用」がトピックとして選ばれ、米Broad InstituteのFeng Zhang氏と米Harvard Medical SchoolのGeorge M.Church氏が選出された。

米Thomson Reuters社は2016年9月21日13時（日本時間）、2016年のトムソン・ロイター引用栄誉賞を発表した。この賞は、学術論文の引用データを分析して、ノーベル賞クラスと目される研究者を選出し、卓越した研究業績をたたえるもの。02年からは、ノーベル賞ウイークの直前である9月に発表されている。15回目となる今年は24人が受賞した。このうち、日本人は3人。ノーベル生理学・医学賞に相当する分野では、本庶佑・京都大学客員教授が「プログラム細胞死1（PD-1）およびその経路の解明により、癌免疫療法の発展に貢献」というトピックで、Gordon J.Freeman氏とAriene H.Sharpe氏の米国機関所属研究者2人と合わせた3人連名で受賞した。ノーベル化学賞に相当する分野では、前田浩・崇城大学DDS研究所特任教授/熊本大学名誉教授と、松村保広・国立がん研究センター先端医療開発センター新薬開発分野分野長の2人が「癌治療における高分子薬物の血管透過性・滞留性亢進（EPR）効果の発見」というトピックで受賞した。これで、Thomson Reuters社が毎年定期的に発表するようになった02年以降の日本人受賞者は延べ25人になった（十倉好紀氏が2回受賞しているので、受賞者は24人）。
