大阪大学大学院医学研究科附属共同研究実習センター（共同研）にゲノム編集センターが新設された。2016年12月14日に開所式が開催され、新センターのウェブサイトも同日に公開された。「これまでの遺伝子組換え技術では遺伝子改変は運や勘に頼っていたが、ピンポイントで遺伝子を改変できるゲノム編集技術が2012年に登場して遺伝子改変の精度が高く迅速になった。一挙にこの技術を取り込むためセンターの開設に至った。新たな技術がまだ出てくる。大きく医療が変わると期待している」と、澤芳樹・医学系研究科長は開所式冒頭のあいさつで語った。

腫瘍溶解性ウイルスと遺伝子治療に特化した新会社の米IGNITE Therapeutics社が設立されたことが、2016年12月12日、発表された。米Pfizer社を戦略的パートナーとして、癌免疫療法に利用する腫瘍溶解性ウイルスワクチンの研究開発を進め、免疫チェックポイント阻害薬との併用療法も視野に入れている。癌の転移巣に送達可能な静注用のワクチンベクターの創出を目指す。

米Eli Lily社は2016年12月8日、抗アミロイドベータ（Aβ）モノクローナル抗体solanezumabのフェーズIII（EXPEDITION3）の結果を発表した。同年11月23日、本試験で主要評価項目を達成しなかったことを明らかにしており、その詳細は、12月8日のアルツハイマー病臨床試験（CTAD）会議で発表された。アルツハイマー病（AD）に伴う軽度認知症の適応で承認申請しない方針に変わりがないという。
