何となく大学院に進学し、成り行きに任せて研究生活を送っていたが、同じ研究室にいた妻と結婚することになり、生計をたてるために就職しなければならなくなった。妻も私も生まれ育った大阪近辺での就職を希望していたが、同じ学部出身で、中外製薬に就職していた先輩の西井易穂さんが研究室に頻繁に足を運び、指導教官に学生の斡旋を依頼していたそうで、教授からは中外製薬への就職を打診された。故郷から遠く離れることに抵抗があったが、先輩の話を聞くうちに中外製薬の研究所で働いてみようと思うようになった。「研究者の自由度が高く、活気に満ち溢れ、やりがいのある職場」であると説明していただいたからである。
