生物に多く存在するLアミノ酸（L体アミノ酸）の鏡像異性体。血液中など体内に存在する遊離アミノ酸や、蛋白質を構成する20種類を基本とするアミノ酸残基は、ほとんどがL体。Dアミノ酸は細菌のペプチドグリカンの構成成分など、限られた生体成分と考えられてきた。そのため、アミノ酸の分析は多くの場合、L体とD体を区別してこなかった。分析化学技術の進歩で区別した定量が可能になり、ヒトでもDアミノ酸が重要な生理機能を担っていることが分かってきた。脳内に豊富なDセリンは、記憶や学習に重要。脳や内分泌組織に豊富なDアスパラギン酸は、神経伝達の制御や内分泌系の調節に関与する。
